How Poor Insulation Leads to Damp, Drafts & Respiratory Illness in Homes

A home that is poorly insulated and suffers from dampness and drafts doesn’t just feel uncomfortable—it can pose serious health risks, especially for children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD.

Children and Young People

Children are particularly vulnerable in damp, poorly insulated homes because their lungs, immune systems, and airways are still developing. Exposure to mould spores, allergens, and pollutants at an early age can irritate delicate airways, increasing the risk of asthma or worsening existing conditions.

Prolonged exposure may even have lasting effects into adulthood, contributing to reduced lung function and higher sensitivity to respiratory illnesses. Studies show that children living in damp environments are more likely to miss school due to illness, impacting both health and wellbeing.

People with Pre-existing Conditions

For anyone already living with asthma, COPD, or other chronic respiratory conditions, poor insulation and the damp, drafty environments it creates can be especially dangerous. Cold, damp air can trigger bronchospasms and airway inflammation, while mould spores and dust mites act as allergens, leading to more frequent and severe flare-ups.

The cycle of exposure and reaction makes recovery harder and can accelerate the progression of conditions like COPD.

Those with Weakened Immunity

Such as the elderly, those undergoing medical treatments, or people with chronic illnesses face a heightened risk.

A compromised immune response means their bodies are less able to fight off infections, making them more susceptible to chest infections, fungal diseases, and complications from common respiratory illnesses. What might be a minor irritation for a healthy adult can become a serious, even life-threatening, condition for someone with a fragile immune system.

Poor insulation in walls, lofts, or floors allows heat to escape, leaving interior surfaces cold and vulnerable to condensation when warm, moist air comes into contact with them—this moisture build-up is a common cause of damp. At the same time, gaps around windows, doors, and roofs, or poorly fitted joinery, let cold air in and warm air out, creating uncomfortable drafts while reducing the effectiveness of heating. Where insulation is insufficient or uneven, such as missing areas in lofts, cavity walls, or floors, cold spots form, providing the perfect environment for moisture to settle, mould to grow, and humidity levels to remain high.

Are you a like Rose?

Rose’s Story: New boiler installation at my mothers house who is 92 years old. A big thank you to everyone involved who made this installation go as smoothly as possible. Shaun explained everything in detail and the installers, Carl and Paul (and the young man) worked very hard and were polite and courteous to my mum. Everyone involved was great. Thank you again.
